DAY 8

Day Eight:  GOD IS FAITHFUL

Psalm 6:6-7 and Psalm 56:3-4 (NIV)

Psalm 6:6-7 “I am worn out from my groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears.  My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes.”

Psalm 56:3-4 “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.  In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust and am not afraid.  What can mere mortals do to me?”

Psalm 6 continues to depict David’s intense struggle with anguish and a fear of death.  He describes sleeplessness and intense grief.  David writes that he filled his bed and couch with tears.  In fact, his sleeplessness and grief even affected his eyesight.

Then in Psalm 56:3-4 David expresses his confidence and trust in God, particularly in times of fear and distress.  The passage emphasizes his decision to place his faith in God rather than allowing his fear to overwhelm and overtake him.

It is critical that we decide to rely on God’s strength, guidance, and protection rather than being consumed by our fear.  Notice that in Psalm 56:4, David affirms his trust in God and his reliance on God’s Word.  By praising God’s Word, he emphasizes the faithfulness and reliability of God’s promises.  David declares that he trusts in God and is not afraid, recognizing that there is no need to fear when God is on his side.  We need to acknowledge that He is our Comforter, Protector, and Provider.

The final line of Psalm 56:4 highlights the limited power of human beings: “What can mere mortals do to me?”  It implies that compared to God Almighty, the threats and actions of those around us are insignificant.  This statement reinforces David’s trust in God’s ultimate authority and protection, diminishing the significance of any harm or opposition that would come from any person or circumstance.

When you are faced with difficulties that bring overwhelming fear, place your trust in God Almighty (El Shaddai).  Verbally affirm His true nature and then proclaim the promises in His Word.

Another beautiful Psalm is Psalm 91.  This will encourage and strengthen your heart.  Read it when you have a moment and speak His protection over your life and the life of your loved ones!

Heavenly Father, may we find comfort and courage in trusting You, even in the most challenging times.  We pray that we can put our confidence in Your promises and recognize that those around us have limited influence compared to Your strength and power that protects us.

Prayer Points:

Personal:  To overcome fears that hinder or inhibit us.

Community:  Schools (educators, teachers, and students)
