Church Is A Team Sport
As children grow, enter school, and begin interacting with others, group activities are important and valuable experiences for their social development.
Team sports, theater, projects, scouts, and other opportunities truly promote a spirit of cooperation and community. Church is also a “team” experience. We are born again individually as we personally respond to God’s invitation to become His child. But the reality is that we are born into God’s FAMILY.
That’s right, you are a part of the “church.” Our spiritual life is meant to grow in an environment with other like-minded people. Not only that, but a healthy church open to the fullorbed expression of His work is also given individual gifts so that the “team” working together can accomplish the mission of sharing His love with the world. When you become a follower of Jesus, the Spirit of God gifts you with supernatural resources to help others. This gifting is not just your natural, inborn passions and talents, but a new expression through you. You have an important place on the team. Another way to say this is, without you His team is incomplete. Relationships are messy, but they are also rewarding. Church is comprised of broken people learning to recover through Christ. Perhaps you have been hurt by some occurrence in the “church” and you’re tempted to just withdraw and play spiritual solitaire. That choice is understandable, but wrong. You deprive yourself of the blessing of receiving from others, and the necessity of offering what you possess to others. Babies play alone… grow up and join the team.
